Why Should Patients Consider
Breast Lift with Implants

Understanding Changes in Breast Contour: A Medical Perspective

As part of the natural aging process, changes in breast contour are commonly experienced. Over time, there can be a noticeable decrease in the structural integrity of the breast skin, contributing to what is medically termed as breast ptosis, or drooping. This phenomenon is often accompanied by a reduction in breast volume, leading to a less full appearance and laxity of the skin.

For individuals seeking to address these changes, breast lifting surgery, or mastopexy, in conjunction with mammoplasty, which involves the insertion of implants, may be a viable option. This surgical procedure is particularly suited for those experiencing:

  • Breasts that appear sagging or have an ’empty’ look.
  • A decrease in breast volume, coupled with a desire to enhance breast size.
  • Noticeable asymmetry between the breasts

It is important to have a detailed consultation with a qualified medical professional to determine the most appropriate approach for your individual needs and to understand the potential outcomes and considerations of the procedure.

  • Breast Implants (Augmentation Mammoplasty)

It is common for patients to inquire whether breast implants are necessary in conjunction with a breast lift procedure. For individuals with adequate skin elasticity and breast tissue, a breast lift (mastopexy) alone may suffice. Conversely, for those with diminished breast tissue or those seeking an increase in breast size, combining a Breast Lift (Mastopexy) with Breast Implants (Mammoplasty) often yields more satisfactory outcomes.

The appropriateness of breast implant dimensions, form, and composition will be determined during your consultation. This decision is based on several factors, including your physical anatomy, the degree of breast sagging (ptosis), and your personal preferences for breast shape and size. Collaborating closely with Dr. Drielsma will be pivotal in aligning the surgical approach with your desired results.

Additionally, concurrent nipple and areola corrective procedures can be performed to reposition the nipples as necessary during your mastopexy. Conditions such as inverted nipples, disproportionate nipple size, or nipple hypertrophy can be addressed and rectified as part of the surgical process.

    What Type of Implants?

When considering Breast Lift (Mastopexy) with Implants (Mammoplasty), it is important to discuss the best type of implant for your body, desired size, and desired shape. There are a number of implants available in different sizes, shapes, and fillers.

    Saline Filled Implants
Saline implants have a “water bed” feel and have been known to cause a “ripple effect” on the surface of the breast. This can occur when the patient has small amounts of breast tissue to begin with and the ripple of the saline within the implant can be seen on the skin surface.
This may be reduced by using smooth surfaced, round implants that are overfilled – within manufacturer specifications – resulting in an implant that is more firm to the touch. This can make the implant look more spherical or round, rather than a more natural teardrop shape.
However, if saline implants deflate, they do so quickly and the saline is easily absorbed by the body.

    Silicone Gel Filled Implants
Silicone Implants are designed to have a more natural feel, similar to that of breast tissue. They are found to hold their shape better than saline implants and tend not to deflate. However, the accepted rupture rate for silicone implants is around 10% over 10 years, which will result in the need for removal or replacement of the implants.
There is also an increased risk of capsule contracture or hardening of the breast with silicone implants – again around 10% over 10 years.

    Smooth Surfaced Implants
Smooth implants have a softer feel and are easier to insert. They most closely mimic the feel of real breast tissue.

    Round Implants
Round implants are less natural looking than tear drop or anatomically shaped implants. These implants may give a better lift than naturally shaped implants or to create contrast between the upper and lower parts of the breast. If a round implant rotates in the breast pocket, it doesn’t tend to affect the breast shape.

    Tear Drop or Anatomical Implants
Anatomical implants tend to be more versatile than round implants. The tear drop shape gives a more natural look to the breast and often better results depending on your desired outcome. However, if the implant rotates in the breast pocket, it needs to be repositioned to recover the natural shape of the breast.

    What Size Implants?

Choosing a post-operative cup size doesn’t always mean you’ll fit exactly into that size; however, in general the goal is to augmentyour breasts to fit your body size, your skin elasticity, your lifestyle, and your desired look.

Dr Drielsma focuses on balance and body proportions when it comes to helping patients choose their final breast size and shape. Patients should consider their height, weight, chest width and the balance between their upper and lower body when deciding on their desired breast size.

There is no one size that fits all when it comes to choosing your breast implant size and final breast or cup size. It is best to discuss your options with Dr Drielsma in your personal consultations.

  • Breast Lift with Implants Scarring?

Every surgical procedure, including plastic surgery, inherently results in scarring. Adhering strictly to the prescribed post-operative care and recovery guidelines is essential for minimising the appearance of scars. The extent and nature of scarring are influenced by several factors, including the specific technique and incision employed, the inherent elasticity of your skin, and your body’s natural scarring tendencies. It’s important to have realistic expectations and understand that individual results may vary.

Breast Lift with implants FAQ

  • Can I Get More Cleavage From a Breast Lift with Implants ?

Enhanced breast contour and cleavage can be attained through a combination of breast lifting with breast Implants.  The final result is contingent upon your individual surgical objectives and the comprehensive pre-operative consultation with Dr. Drielsma, during which your expectations and the feasibility of the desired outcomes will be thoroughly discussed.

  • How is a Breast lift with implants procedure performed?

In a breast lift procedure, medically known as mastopexy, excess skin is surgically removed and the remaining skin is tightened to elevate the breast.  This technique addresses sagging and improves the breast’s shape and contour.  However, if the breast has also experienced a significant loss of volume and tissue, the insertion of a breast implant, a process termed augmentation mammoplasty, may be recommended.  The implant serves to enhance the overall aesthetic outcome of the mastopexy by restoring volume, thereby preventing a deflated appearance post-surgery.  In the majority of cases, the implant is strategically placed beneath the pectoral muscle.  This placement is preferred as positioning the implant above the muscle has been found to potentially exacerbate breast ptosis (sagging) rather than ameliorate it.

  • How Much Downtime is there with a Breast Lift (Mastopexy) with Implants (Mammoplasty) surgery?

Your procedure will take around 3 to 3.5  hours, though this can differ depending on your body, desired results and the positioning of your implants. You will be able to return to work after 2 weeks and return to normal physical activity within 6 weeks.
There will be visible bruising that should fade within 2 weeks and swelling that will begin to subside after 3 weeks. Keep in mind that it can take 12 months for your breasts to finally settle into their final shape, size and position. Do not return to vigorous exercise until you are cleared by Dr. Drielsma and ensure you always wear a supportive bra while exercising.

  • Are There Pre-Operative Requirements?

You will require a referral  from your GP to book your consultation.   It is advisable to stop smoking 2 weeks before surgery and stop any aspirin or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) at least one week before surgery to avoid blood thinning complications.

  • What Happens During Recovery?

Following your surgical procedure, it is imperative to adhere to a prescribed set of post-operative guidelines to ensure optimal recovery.  Typically, patients may encounter swelling and discomfort, which is expected to persist for approximately 3 to 4 weeks.  It is crucial to refrain from engaging in strenuous activities or heavy lifting for a duration of 6 weeks to prevent any complications and facilitate proper healing.

Pain management is a critical aspect of your post-operative care. It will be tailored to address your unique needs and circumstances.  This personalised pain management plan will be developed and fine-tuned in collaboration with Dr. Drielsma during your scheduled consultations.  Our priority is to ensure your comfort and promote a smooth and effective recovery process every step of the way..

  • Are There Risks?

There are risks with any surgical procedure and as such there are some potential risks and complications when it comes to plastic surgery.  Complications are uncommon but they can include infections, unfavourable scars, seroma (the accumulation of fluid), wrinkling, leaking or rupture of the implant, capsular contracture, and asymmetry. Common side effects of breast lift with implants surgery are bruising and swelling.

  • What is the Cost of Breast Lift (Mastopexy) with Implants (Mammoplasty) Surgery?

The cost of breast lift (mastopexy) surgery will differ from surgeon to surgeon, so be sure to do your research before making your final decision.  Be wary of very low fixed price or high priced surgery quotes.

It is often said ….”Good surgery isn’t cheap and cheap surgery isn’t good”

A cheap surgery, especially overseas or “tourist” surgeries, which can result in dangerous complications and expensive revision surgery.  Dr Drielsma has much experience in correcting these surgeries, his ethos is “It’s your body, you should never settle for second best or cheap procedures, your health should always come first!”
